About

Sydney and Hong Kong

About nine hours apart by air, at either end of a great deal of the region’s energy trade.

Two bases

Danny Topperberg is based in Sydney and Hong Kong, and on the road a good deal of the time.

Hong Kong is where much of the region’s capital and trading meets, and a short flight from many of the buyers who take Australian energy.

The two clocks at the foot of every page on this site are set to those two cities.

Why the two fit

Supply in the south

Australia exports LNG, coal and minerals in very large volumes, and has done for decades. His first serious deals were mineral off-take agreements negotiated with Chinese state-owned enterprises during the mining boom.

Demand and capital in the north

Many of the buyers, lenders and investors on the other side of those contracts sit in North Asia. Being close to them makes it easier to meet counterparties in person, which is still where most of the real diligence happens.

On the road

Between the two cities is a lot of travel. Most of the work still needs a meeting in the room, more than once.
